Profile
I'm a Chief Warrant Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard, currently working as a Senior Maritime Safety and Compliance Officer on the Great Lakes. I inspect commercial vessels, respond to casualties such as engine room fires and groundings, and check that vessel security plans meet Maritime Transportation Security Act requirements, including how they address cyber risk. Over 17 years in the Coast Guard my work has taken me from a cutter in the Pacific to Alaska, the Gulf Coast, New England and the Great Lakes.
I earned my bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences from Oregon State University, graduating summa cum laude. I'm a Board Certified Safety Professional and an NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist. More recently I've been building technical skills. I hold the GIAC GFACT certification, completed Computational Thinking and Introduction to Python Programming through the University of Pennsylvania, and recently enrolled in the Computer Science: Algorithms and Artificial Intelligence certificate at Northern Virginia Community College.
I'll retire from the Coast Guard in 2028. After that I want to work in cybersecurity, where I can put my background in risk, regulation and incident response to use while I keep learning the technical side.
Feel free to look at my experience and skills, or find me on LinkedIn.
The best part of boarding a vessel is finding out who else lives aboard. Dogs turn out to be more common on working boats than you'd expect. Here are some of the ones I've met along the way.
